Hannes Soomer (Kallio Racing, Yamaha) started the second round of the Supersport World Championship with P7 in the Free Practices in Jeres, Spain today.
Soomer said that in the heat of nearly forty degrees, a slightly different setting must be used than they had so far achieved during training at auto24ring in Pärnu. Soomer was satisfied with today, although it was not possible to get in a totally perfect lap. Andrea Locatelli (time 1.42,988, BARDAHL Evan Bros. WorldSSP Team), who was almost half a second faster in these sessions than everybody else, is a puzzle for him and all the other riders.
"I believe that at the moment all the teams are trying to find a weapon which would help against Locatelli," said Soomer. The rest of the competitors are at his reach, he lost less than a second to Steven Odendaal, a South African who took the second time in FP.
Today's second Free Practice took place at the same time as tomorrow's first will be held race, so Soomer can well imagine how difficult the conditions are that await him. "The fact that the afternoon race will be much tougher is evident already by the fact that everyone was much slower in the second FP than their times in the morning," said Soomer. "If the bike can withstand such heat, it can withstand any conditions — and today there was no problem with the bike."
The first race of the Supersport class will take place on Saturday at 16:15 Estonian time, the second on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. In the opening round of the World Championships in Australia, Soomer reached the best result of his career so far, finishing 6th.
