Hannes Soomer (MPM WILSport Racedays) was close to P5 today at the eighth round of the World SPP Championship at Donington Park, Great Britain, when he made a riding mistake and finished 15th.
Soomer was on P9 on the starting grid and by the end of the first lap he had reached P7 already. „Today the plan was to not loose places, but also to not make mistakes,“ said Soomer, who was on P6 for most of the race. Rafaele De Rosa (MV AGUSTA Reparto Corse) passed him on Lap 14 and staid on P5 and according to Soomer it was obvious by the end of the race that the Italian's tyre was not lasting any more. „I knew that the bike does not allow me to attack in a standard situation, therefore I wanted to gain as much as possible with the chicane.“ Unfortunately, he cut too much over the curb in Turn 10 of the last lap and crashed. Soomer was still able to re-join the race, but fell to P15 in the end, getting one point in the Championship.
„The team did an incredible job again this weekend to prepare the bike the way it was in the race,“ said Soomer. „Everything but the final result, which was my mistake, was excellent this weekend.“ The base, suspension and control of the bike cannot be made any better according to him. But the oldest engine in this competition class leaves its mark and causes him to push over the limits as a rider.
With 28 points Soomer is holding the 12th position in the Championship Standings. Tomorrow morning at 0700 Soomer will return to the Military Service from where he was able to participate in the Donington Park round with a special permission. The next round for Soomer will be the tenth one in Portugal on the first weekend of September.
