Hannes Soomer (Kallio Racing, Yamaha) took P8 in the second race of the third round of the Supersport World Championship in Portimao, Portugal today.
Soomer said that yesterday's problems with the grip of the front end could be eliminated for today's race and he was again much closer to the top five. Soomer got a good start and rode the first laps in 6th place. Then he fell to 8th and 9th but regained P8 after De Rosa fell.
"The fifth position was very close, but the final result will still show P8," said Soomer. In the finish, he lost 0.671 seconds to fifth-placed Phillipp Oettl, regaining almost three seconds in the last few laps. In the second half of the last lap, Soomer was almost half a second faster than the riders ahead, but he missed very narrowly a higher position, just one-tenth of a second. "I did a couple of really bad laps, but towards the end the others made mistakes, I rode the last lap on the verge of risk and it was very good," added Soomer.
Andrea Locatelli (BARDAHL Evan Bros. WorldSSP Team) claimed his fifth consecutive WSSP win, becoming the first rider to achieve the milestone.
Soomer currently holds 9th place at the World Championships with 39 points. The next WSSP round will take place on 28-30 August in Aragon, Spain. In the few weeks between races, Soomer and the team want to find, what is missing to enable him to fight for higher positions.
