Hannes Soomer kicked off the World Championship season

Hannes Soomer (Kallio Racing, Yamaha) started the Supersport World Championship season in Aragon, Spain today, being 11th in Free Practices.

"The feeling today was very different from the test a month ago, where we rode mainly on the practice bike," said Soomer. "I haven't been able to test the race bike much because it is in Finland, but it turns out that the frames of this and the practice bike have come from the factory so different that the settings of the practice bike cannot be transferred as is."

In both FPs, Soomer together with the race engineer Marko Rohtlaan and his father Tõnu Soomer tried to find a suitable setting for the race bike. "In FP2 we made a bold step and it seemed that we came close to a solution as the last laps were quite good," said Soomer.

In the morning the air temperature in Aragon was 22 degrees, in the afternoon it rose to 28 degrees and the track temperature was almost 50 degrees. "It's very hot and everyone had problems with the grip," said Soomer. In both today's FPs, the fastest was Finn Niki Tuuli (MV Agusta Corse Clienti), with whom Soomer shared a team a few years ago. Today, Soomer's lap time was 1.175 seconds slower than Tuuli's.

"Tuuli and [Steven] Odendaal were clearly faster today, but I was not much slower than the others," said Soomer, who wants to get a place in the front rows in tomorrow's Superpole and race. "The situation in the garage is very calm today and I have no doubt that we will be able to find a solution," Soomer was confident. "Marko and Dad are a great combination and it is also good that the whole team knows all my info also from the tests done in Pärnu."

The qualification of the World SSP takes place on Saturday at 11:25 Estonian time, the first race at 16:15, the second race is on Sunday at 13:30. News, results and broadcasts at www.worldsbk.com
